Some No Longer Unknowns in Science

چکیده
Three out of 125 “big questions of science”, can now be claimed to have been answered. All of these questions involve water; its structure, its role in protein folding and its role in protein-protein association.

Extensions of nominal terms
This thesis studies two major extensions of nominal terms. In particular, we study an extension with λ-abstraction over nominal unknowns and atoms, and an extension with an arguably better theory of freshness and α-equivalence. Nominal terms possess two levels of variable: atoms a represent variable symbols, and unknowns X are ‘real’ variables. As a syntax, they are designed to facilitate metap...
متن کاملComputing Science Group THE UNIFORM PRIOR AND ZERO INFORMATION: A TECHNICAL NOTE
Reasoning about maximal performance of hypothesis tests is difficult when there is supposed to be no information about some of the parameters. A common technique is to place a uniform prior on unknowns. In a recent steganography application [1], this gave a nonsensical answer, and we give an exposition and resolution of the paradox here. This note is a companion to [1].
متن کامل“Known Knowns, Known Unknowns, & Unknown Unknowns”: Computational Science challenges for analysis of multi-dimensional DNA matrices in Evolutionary & Population Genomics
The advent of so-called NextGen DNA sequencing methods has massively increased the rate at which DNA sequence information can be generated, and the volume and complexity of the data matrices that apply to biological questions, including molecular and organismal evolution and population biology. One such approach is the analysis of complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genomes from multiple species...
متن کاملInterpolation-based second-order monotone finite volume schemes for anisotropic diffusion equations on general grids
We propose two interpolation-based monotone schemes for the anisotropic diffusion problems on unstructured polygonal meshes through the linearity-preserving approach. The new schemes are characterized by their nonlinear two-point flux approximation, which is different from the existing ones and has no constraint on the associated interpolation algorithm for auxiliary unknowns. Thanks to the new...
متن کاملCircularity and Lambda Abstraction
In this tribute to Doaitse Swierstra, we present the first transformation between lazy circular programs à la Bird and strict circular programs à la Pettorossi. Circular programs à la Bird rely on lazy recursive binding: they involve circular unknowns and make sense equationally. Circular programs à la Pettorossi rely on the inductive construction of functions and their eventual application: th...
